I saw Gabriel (Off Broadway) on 05/29/10. Overall, I'd say it was a 3-star rating. I'd summarize it by saying “This darker play is very well acted”

I'd describe the show as mildy interesting and melodramatic. If this were a movie, I'd rate it PG-13. I would not recommend this show to children.

I wouldn't see this show again. I sat in the left orchestra area of the theater. The view was very good despite the distance and the seats were average.

This certainly isn't my favorite play, but I think the performance was quite good. Some may have taken the officer for a caricature, but given the frank harshness of the period (and even the cadence of the German language) opposite the character's disgust with his own situation, I'd expect some some slightly exaggerated behavior.

Honestly, I didn't follow many of the plot turns. The story may even be more compelling if it had been told sans title character. I found the most interesting interactions were between the daughter-in-law and mother. I didn't need the metaphor.
