I saw Fela! (Broadway) on 11/04/10. Overall, I'd say it was a 4-star rating. I'd summarize it by saying “Starts strong, falls apart in the middle. The band is really good.”

The first act of Fela! is far better than the second act. The story line follows a tumultuous time for the main characters, and the first act is full of humor and humanity. The second act gets lost in a dream / mystic sequence and doesn't really get back into the rhythm.

Kevin Mambo is fantastic as Fela. The dancing is crazy.

The underlying story is not necessarily a happy one, and I think the way the show ends is a bit flat. It just sort of hits a wall at the end.

Patti LaBelle was not there the night I saw this show.
