I saw Billy Elliot (Broadway) on 12/17/08. Overall, I'd say it was a 5-star rating. I'd summarize it by saying “Yayyyy....Dance Billy, Dance!!!”
I had a fantastic time and left the show feeling happy and a bit emotional. I'd describe the show as heart-warming, smart, and an all-around great dance musical. The dancing was a highlight of the show because it's the heart of the show. If this were a movie, I'd rate it PG. I would recommend this show to just about everybody.
I saw this show because my friend Jerry saw it in London and raved about it. So I saw it with him here in NYC. I would see it again. I sat in the left orchestra area of the theater. The view was great and the seats were near some annoying people but we suffered through.
I gave this show low marks in categories like Music and Production Value, but I still strongly recommend the show and give it high overall marks. There was a lighting board problem that stopped the show right before intermission.....this really should be unacceptable considering the ticket price, but I still loved the show despite its flaws. The other major flaw was the music was just average. BUT the dancing, acting, and heart-tugging story really put this show over the top and in a special place in my heart. I really love the movie too by the way.
Go see Billy Elliott if you havent, but let me know if there are still tech problems with the show.
