Jennifer Hudson joining the cast of “Smash”

Oscar Award winner Jennifer Hudson will join NBC’s musical series “Smash” in its upcoming second season. Hudson will appear in a multi-episode arc as Veronica Moore, a Tony-winning actress who affects the lives of budding Broadway performers Karen, played by Katherine McPhee, and Ivy, played by Megan Hilty.

Hudson rose to stardom after to appearance on the third season of “America Idol”. Though the singer did not win the competition, she was selected to star as Effie White in the film adaptation of Dreamgirls. The role earned her an Academy Award. Hudson’s other film credits include “The Secret Life of Bees” and “Sex and the City”. She has also released two albums.

“Smash” will begin shooting this summer in and around New York City. It will return to the NBC schedule in the winter. As previously reported, 2012 Tony Award nominee Jeremy Jordan will join the cast as well.

The second season will include at least 15 episodes, under the supervision of Josh Safran (“Gossip Girl”) who has replaced Theresa Rebeck as show runner. Rebeck will retain her holding as the executive producer.

In it’s first season “Smash” averaged about 7.7 million total viewers, with a 2.6 demographic rating, representing the network’s best totals for a drama in both measures. “Smash” also features recent Tony Award winner Christian Borle (Peter and the Starcatcher), Debra Messing, Jack Davenport and Anjelica Huston.
