And the number one Broadway pop hit is…

1. Summertime, from Porgy and Bess

“Summertime” was written by George Gershwin, with lyrics by DuBone Heyward, for the 1935 opera Porgy and Bess, the most revived show in Broadway history. The song took on a life of its own and has been recorded and performed in infinite genres and languages; at least 33,000 versions of the song exist. It remains one of the best-known love songs, though it was written as a lullaby. Notable covers include Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis and Janis Joplin.
