The Broadway superstar, Bernadette Peters, will be back on NBC’s musical tv series “Smash” as Ivy Lynn’s famous mother, when the show returns in January. Few details have been released, however Peters is set to appear mid-season.

Season one presented Peters as a pushy matriarchal character, encouraging Ivy to be the best, or be nothing.

Bernadette Peters joins a long list of guests and new regulars set to appear on the new season, including Jennifer Hudson, Jeremy Jordan, Sean Hayes, Jesse L. Martin, Krysta Rodriguez, Andy Mietus, Nikki Blonksy and Daniel Sunjata.

“Smash” began shooting over the summer in and around New York City. It will return to the NBC schedule in the winter. The second season will include at least 15 new episodes, under the supervision of Josh Safran (“Gossip Girl”) who has replaced Theresa Rebeck as show runner. Rebeck will retain her holding as executive producer.

In its first season, “Smash” averaged about 7.7 million total viewers, with a 2.6 demographic rating representing the network’s best totals for a drama in both measures. “Smash” also features Tony Award winner Christian Borle (Peter and the Starcatcher), Debra Messing, Jack Davenport and Angelica Huston.
